Perhaps a bit late, 'Evolution' by Mandelbrot, which celebrates the publication of 'The Origins Of Species' by Charles Darwin, last year. B. Teichner and P. Muench, also known as Mandelbrot were asked to present a musical work for the Museum am Scholerberg which displayed works of/on Darwin. They created an hour worth of music, which are presented here on this CD in the form of nine tracks, called in German by their numbers, 'Null', 'Sechs', 'Zwei' etc. Not the most logical order, and it seems to me that the music is not a linear evolution either. Played, I think, on a bunch of analogue synthesizers and sound effects. Heavy cosmic music on display here. Atmospheric, with arpeggio's, delay machines, even some rhythm machines, this music is not what you would expect: an hour of drones, but well rounded compositions of moody electronics. Not music I would easily associate with a museum, and I wonder what the visitors may have thought about it. Perhaps a bit too much popmusic (?) for four white walls? But it works well at home, even when thematic approach is a bit lost here. Niels Mark discussed the first real CD by Alarmen, 'There Is No Place Like Hoan' in VItal Weekly 534 and he told us that its a project by Carsten Stiller. It was followed by two MP3 releases, and now there is 'Next', the next CD by Alarmen (never a good title for a CD I'd say, suggesting nothing more than 'oh, the next CD'). It starts off with a harsher rhythmic minimalist piece, along the lines of the previous release. But that's only deceiving the listener. The other six tracks on 'Next' are perhaps like-wise minimalist in approach, but sound a bit more lighter in approach. Synthesizer parts are mixed up a bit higher and a piece like 'Next 3' is slow, almost dub-like, with some nice, mean organ sounds blubbling below, while 'Next 4' is almost cheery in approach. Quite an interesting varied album, with only 'Next 7' to be something of a hit and miss track. The last full length release by Spherical Disrupted was 'Null' (Vital Weekly 482), followed by the remix album 'Barriere'. The new one 'Quasar' (short for 'Quasi-Stellar Radio Source') is also not a full length, but perhaps more like a EP of five tracks (long one at that: total is about fifty-five minutes) plus three remixes. Like Alarmen heavily relying on the use of rhythm, with an extended use of analogue synthesizers which sound even more like cosmic music than that of Alarmen. Arpeggio's are used extensively here, along with long sustaining sounds, dark chords and such like. Not every track is as strong here: 'Galaxy Bulge' for instance just doesn't seem to have enough variation to be fully interesting. Its too long. But a piece like 'Solar Luminosity' on the other hand shows it can be done: moody, atmospheric, rhythmic, all combined in a hypnotic piece. No wonder it gets a remix treatment, by Xabec, who pulls out even more cosmic/ambient house patterns from the original. Empusae knows how to give a more danceable spin to 'Accretion Disc' into some proto techno vein whereas Spherical Disrupted himself remixes Fractional Shift into a chilling closure of the CD - not the best track here, with some slight distortion in the lower regio of the piece. All in all a nice release with some minor flaws. (FdW)

Next in order. That's how we could simply characterize last work of this electro formation, that is active with its experimental work from the year 2001 and during their existence has transformed to some other surface, where musically balance in the waters of atmospheric electronic with elements of idm, or industrial. Many spiraling sequences, noises, contrast sounds in atmospheric turbulences and melodic sub tones. Not very experimental or noisy and also not quite ambient listening. Cosmic dust spread in micro fragments, recycled into our atmosphere through communication machine in your player...My favorite next 4.. Beautiful track that will let you flow with its atmosphere and melody lines. Excellent... (4/5) Ryby

Alarmen wurde 2000 als Solo-Projekt von Carsten Stiller gegründet, im folgenden Jahr veröffentlichte er dann zusammen mit Betriebsdruck seine erste CDr und präsentierte damit seine eigene Perspektive auf Ambient und IDM. 2004 mitbegründete er das Audiophob-Label, über welches alle seine Veröffentlichungen, mit Ausnahme der ersten, produziert und vertrieben wurden. So auch sein 2006 erschienenes Début-Album "There's No Place Like Hoan", dessen Nachfolger "Next" noch ganze 3 Jahre auf sich warten lies und weitere 9 Monate brauchte, um von mir rezensiert zu werden. Live war Alarmen übrigens u.a. schon auf dem Maschinenfest, Elektroanschlag und Schlagstrom zu erleben, was sich im Lebenslauf sicher nicht schlecht macht und an sich schon ein gewisses Maß an Qualität impliziert. Die Titel der Lieder sind im Grunde nichtssagend und fokussieren dadurch die Interpretationsansätze des Hörers auf die Musik selbst. Und diese definiert sich jeweils primär in Form evozierter Emotionen und imaginärer Bilder. Die Stimmung schwankt dabei zwischen klaustrophobischer Lichtdeprivation und farbenprächtigem Sonnenbad, so ist der erste Track ersterem zuzuordnen und steht für die Dark Ambient-Seite dieses Werks. Eine geradezu drone-artige, kontinuierliche Bassline wird hier kombiniert mit einem dumpfen, an unregelmässigen Herzschlag erinnernden, Basskick. Verziert wird das ganze mit einem relativ minimalistischen Aufgebot an glitch-artigen Sounds, die aber ausreichen, um eine stetige Entwicklung anzudeuten. Die andere Seite repräsentiert z.B. "Next 4", das mit einem Geräusch beginnt, welches mir wie zirpende Grillen auf Crack vorkommt und fliessend in ein helles Rauschen übergeht. Dazu gibt es an Glasspiel erinnernde, sanfte, melodiöse Synthlines und ein ruhiges, leichtfüssiges Beatwork, was zusammen wirklich sommerliche Assoziationen weckt. Die Ansätze kohärenter Melodien sind auf "Next" mehr oder weniger flüchtig und scheinen ziellos weiterzulaufen, d.h. es gibt keinen epischen Klimax oder dergleichen. Es bleibt grösstenteils besinnlich und sehr atmosphärisch, trotz diverser Klang-Spielereien, wie man sie bei IDM häufig antrifft. Insofern gelingt Alarmen der Spagat zwischen Ambient und experimenteller Lied-Gestaltung. Ein angenehmes Album für ruhige Momente, welches zwischen unstetigen Rhythmen und stabiler Struktur, sphärischen und Clicks'n'Cuts-Sequenzen pendelt. Eine dialektische Wirkung entfalten auch die gelegentlichen Noise-Elemente in Korrelation zu den sehr melodischen, klareren Klängen. Aufgrund des recht offenen Verlaufs bleibt allerdings auch, zumindest anfangs, nicht viel hängen und es droht zu einer amorphen Masse zu verschwimmen. (4/6)

The German project Alarmen has already released a number of albums plus several mp3-releases. "Next" is the 2nd official full-length cd where they reveal experimental explorations merged with rhythms. It's a way to make experimental music more accessible, but the album definitely has much more to offer. One of the main characteristics in sound is the addition of numerous space-bleeping parts. It leads the album into a mysterious 'astral dimension' like a kind of signals from other planets. The track "Next 3" perfectly stands for this intriguing atmosphere. Musically, this cut is well crafted revealing an impressive arsenal of detailed sounds. This song goes on for more than 12", but never stagnates. This is for sure the absolute highlight. "Next 6" is another fascinating experience where Alarmen perfectly mixes experimental elements and pure wafting and space-like parts. A similar style appears on the last track "Next 7". Alarmen invites the listener to experience a particular sonic universe where it comes to a fusion between prosperity and angst. This is not the typical dark ambient release, but an album exploring different angles of ambient music. (DP:7)DP.

Das Erste was einem bei Alarmens neuem Album auffällt, ist das Artwork. Offenbar inspiriert von den guten alten Straßenplänen, die schon so manche Windschutzscheibe im entscheidenden Moment verdeckt haben, ist es ebenso minimalistisch wie originell. Gleiche Bewertung gilt auch für die Musik, die sich deutlich vom Vorgänger „There’s no Place like Hoan“ abhebt. War dieser noch quasi ausschließlich von kalten und ‚spitzen’ Klängen dominiert, bietet „Next“ soundmäßig deutlich mehr Tex- und Temperaturen. Die sieben Tracks, schlicht durchnummeriert von „Next 1“ bis „Next 7“, sind zwar teilweise immer noch kalt und vor allem düster, was ihre Atmosphäre angeht. Aber zwischen solchen finden sich diesmal auch warme und fast schon melodische Tracks (besonders schön: „Next 4“). Als Hintergrundbeschallung für das Vorspiel auf dem Fell vor dem Kamin ist das Album aber nach wie vor nicht geeignet, keine Bange. Am ehesten knüpft wohl noch „Next 5“ an den Vorgänger an. Den Track könnte ich mir auch gut in einigen Szenen des sehr cthulhuiden Computerspielklassikers „American McGee’s Alice“ vorstellen. [GM] Bewertung: 8.0 / 10 Fazit: Sehr gelungenes (Dark) Ambient/Listening Electro-Album, das mit jedem Track erneut überrascht.
